How the Colour of Your Carpet Can Transform the Mood of a Space
FAQs

Carpeting a garage can work well for transforming it into a more usable space (ie. family games room or home gym).
The best carpet for a garage is a durable, closed-cell synthetic “garage carpet” (often needlepunch) that resists moisture, UV and stains.
Installing wooden floorboards usually costs between $60 and $150 per square metre, varying with labour rates, subfloor preparation and installation method.
Wooden flooring in New Zealand generally costs between $120 and $500 per square metre, depending on the timber type and finish.
The best wood for floorboards is typically oak or maple, as they are durable, stable, and offer a timeless aesthetic that suits most interiors.
Tiling a kitchen floor in New Zealand typically costs $200 to $500 per square metre, including tiles and installation, depending on the material used and layout complexity.
The best tile for a kitchen floor is one that isn’t going to be dangerous or slippery when it’s wet. It’s worth giving the tile a try before you purchase.
There are many different grades of vinyl and cheaper options are more likely to dent or fade over time. Vinyl can be difficult to repair or recycle, making it less eco-friendly than other options.
Whether vinyl is “better” than laminate for flooring really comes down to where you’re installing it, how it will be used, your budget, your aesthetic preferences, and even your climate.
If you need waterproofing (bathroom, kitchen, laundry) vinyl is the better choice as it’s the safer bet for moisture-prone areas.
If you are installing in a dry, stable environment (e.g. living room, bedroom), and want a quality wood look on a budget then laminate is a better choice.
The best carpet colour is one that balances practicality (hiding fluff/lint/dirt) while matching your décor, typically a mid-tone neutral (taupe, warm grey, greige) that conceals wear but still feels versatile.
A good quality carpet (e.g. solution-dyed nylon or premium wool blend) generally costs $30 to $120+ per square metre depending on the fibre, pile and brand.
Carpeting an average NZ home typically costs $5,000 to $10,000 including materials, underlay and labour.
The “best cheapest” flooring (balancing cost and performance) is carpet or good-quality vinyl (sheet or plank) or mid-grade laminate if you want a hard flooring option.
In 2026, key flooring trends will include wide-plank engineered timber, warm neutral wood tones replacing cool greys, patterned layouts (herringbone / chevron), and durable, low-maintenance luxury vinyl or hybrid floors with a sustainability focus.
Installing flooring in New Zealand can range between $15 and $70 per square metre including labour, depending on the material, site conditions and preparation required. Carpet ranges between $20 and $30; Laminate ranges between $50 and $70. Other types of flooring can range from these prices upwards.
